A Brief Encounter

heyhey peeps!
haha i feel so bad for posting so many emo poems xD
but aniwaes, e cosplaying thing has been confirmed!
yep, this poem was inspired by yesterday's KBOX outing!
woohoo it was soo fun!
enjoy!
xoxo

A brief encounter
6.40am
A girl in grey alights the bus,
Taking a hasty glance at her watch
And then scurrying towards the long bridge
Leading to the place
Of imminent doom

6.41am
The imouto of the former girl
Wipes the droplets of sweat
Beginning to form about her red glasses
As somewhere, not so far off,
A dancer takes dainty steps onto that same bridge.

6.42 am
The girl with the squash racket
peers out of the bus window
And recognizes the figure of
A way-too-tall, way-too-bubbly girl
Who has just alighted the earlier bus.

6.43am
As the bus pulls away,
Another shoots pass.
In its window, a punk-rocker girl
Spots her former schoolmate atop the bridge

6.44 am
Each step closer to the oriental building
Elicits more thoughts
In the way-too-Jap-inclined mind
Of the girl with the pink bag.
Projects, deadlines, tests, results.

6.45am
A petite boy sighs,
Too lost in the same thoughts of his female counterpart
To notice two other boys in similar uniforms
Walking along the same path as him

6.46am
A quiet, solemn bus
Is suddenly filled with a chorus of
Handphone message tones,
All to the tune of
yume-no-tsubasa.
Two girls (whose names the author
Still often mixes up)

and their other two school mates
Snap their heads up in delightful surprise,
Just in time to catch a glimpse
Of two older boys outside the window,
Both equally surprised by the message.

Meanwhile, a bridge
Comes to live with the aforementioned ringtone,
Startling the nine students
Who have suddenly found themselves
All together at once,
In the middle of that bridge
Which they would,
From today onwards,
Have something more to remember for
Than just ‘the dreaded bridge’.
Together, they glance down at their mobile phones

“hamamatsu gathering
on 15 dec 07!
Chalet and cosplay
@ Marine Parade!
-- the RGS girls”

6.47 am
20 students arrive at their respective schools,
Their faced graced with a smile,
And a little more than a
Pleasant thought
Lingering in their minds.

XOXO

Sing a松

Haha ok I wrote another stupid emo poem cuz kimchi was pestering me to write one xD err ya, but honestly speaking I’m really quite ashamed of this wan, like I juz pulled it out of e air while peeing one day n anyhow sat down to write it. U noe I think I spent a longer time trying to hack into our blog acc (cuz I couldn’t rmb e username n password) than I spent writing this??
Ok nvm, nobody visits this blog aniwaes, which will save me e embarrassment :)
Haha ok it really sucks so dun read if u dun wan to. Oh but you must read the title! (woohoo! I can officially pun across 3 languages now!)
Kk enjoy
<33>

Sing a松
(Can be read as ‘sing a song’ or
‘singa-matsu’, whichever you prefer =)

The scene begins in an airport
It starts off with the single tapping of a foot,
And the excited shuffling of another.
18 other pairs of feet soon join in
And rhythm quickly picks up
As they sail into the first stanza.
A cord or two from ‘yume no tsubasa’joins in,
along with ‘liang shan bo yu zhu li ye’,
and our DJ, Zhang Quan remixes them together,
harajuku style
The vocals soon join in
Nigel, our soprano,
Barely hitting the highest (though somewhat off) key
With the rest of the guys his back-up altos
And the girls joining in (though somewhat strained)
As the tenor and bass

JiaJia, debbie and Ashley step up
As the lead singers of the chorus,
Their voices clear and distinct,
Like how this memory will always remain.
The others pick up their instruments and begin to play,
smiling wistfully at the memory of a familiar phrase,
‘Hamamatsu—city of music’
(They’d heard it when visiting the Yamaha factory)
Lay Ting and Esther strum the Shamisen and koto,
Their dainty notes speaking of the
Calligraphy lessons, yukata lessons and tea ceremonies.
Kimchi and Fang Yi join in,
Their fingers trailing the black and white piano keys,
So synchronized they are that it elicits
Mischievous smiles,
As the rest recall the scandals and kokuhakus
A techno beat is soon interspersed in,
It’s Clement’s way of telling his story
Of the comp labs and of sneaking off to K
Mean while, soft notes float from the violins
In Vivien’s and Mabel’s hands,
Mirroring the warm smiles of
the friends and families met in Hamamatsu.
And in the background,
Lam plays a brightly coloured flute,
Its red, yellow and green holes
Oddly resembling a traffic light
Alongside her, Weite, Shirley and Jo
Strap on their rocker gear
Their loud strumming matching
The ecstasy of Tokyo Disneyland

The chorus soon ends and stanza two begins.
Clement, Jo, Herrick and Ashley
Take up the roles of backup singers,
Ones which are small, yet important
Like the job of organizing social nite
They’d done a spectacular job,
For they’d really made it a memorable evening
Qian Rui and Gui Qi join in with the shaker,
The sound of its sand grains
Reminding the choir awfully much
of sand from sentosa which clung to them,
refusing to be washed off by time and tide,
much like the friendships formed that day.
The conductor’s stick Debbie raises up
(which closely resembles the satay sticks
they’d speared mashmallows with during the BBQ)
reminds them of that wonder national day BBQ
and the hearty songs they’d sung at the top of their voices.
so despite the embarrassing memory of the
lame (not to be confused with ‘lam’) performance
they’d put up during matching ceremony,
the choir links their arms and sway to music
as the bridge of the song approaches

The bridge sees the choir members
Each singing their own parts,
Their voices telling their own different stories.
Kimchi of his buddy robbing vending machines
And Nigel of his onnarashii(girly) buddy,
Esther of the spicy food her buddy couldn’t take
And Lay Ting of Bugis, Wild Wild Wet, and all the
Fun places she’d taken her buddy to.
And though each part is unique in its own way,
The dream-like quality they share in unmistakable.
And the song they carefully weave together,
Like the threads of the rich friendships formed,
Is beautiful beyond words.

The voices converge on the last beat,
Ending the song on a high note.
The applause that follows soon dies down
And each member leaves,
Returning to the quiet
Of their daily lives
Yet if one listened carefully,
One would hear the blithe tune
Still reverberating
From each
And every one of their hearts.

Dreaming a Beautiful Dream

Dreaming a beautiful dream

I remember the matching ceremony
We’d danced and sang our hearts out then
Then there was the moment we’d all been waiting for
When we’d meet our hosts

The days went by
Lessons in Japanese we vaguely understood
They were enriching nonetheless
Kyuu Shoku, we looked forward to that daily
When we’d line up to collect our trays
Special lessons with the other Singaporeans
They were like brief opportunities
To return into our comfort zone of fellow Singaporeans
Tea ceremony was nice despite my aching legs
I remember trying on the yukata
And carefully sticking flowers into my ikebana bowl
City tour was the most memorable
When we were reunited with the Chuubu people
We had dressed up in out blazers
And took traffic light photos
And played murderer on the bus

I remember the CCA periods
When we’d sneaked off to K,
Bursting with ecstasy at our new-found freedom
I remember Clement startling the teacher with a “YA HO!”
And running off like nothing happened
I remember us spamming Jia Min in the computer lab
All taking on the name ‘Hamamatsu dreaming’
What an appropriate name, for the two weeks flew by
Like a dream. A beautiful one indeed.

I remember the scandals—they were entertaining
Fang Yi getting married to Kimchi
And Weite stealing the bride
Lay Ting and Clement behind the tree
I remember the concentration and the dares
And Lam confessing to Shingo
And the ‘bang bang’ trend we’d begun in the school
As well as the new ‘word’ we’d taught them

I remember the teary goodbyes
And Kimchi’s host chasing the bus
And the Hostel we’d checked into
I remember ofuro
Where Weite strutted in butt naked
Eliciting screams from everyone
And Qian Rui enjoying ‘free show’
And Lam suggesting ‘wear poker’
I remember Harajuku
When we ran from shop to shop
Heads light and dizzy with ecstasy
But arms heavy with bags of accessories,
Totally dazzled by all the outlandishness
And Jo’s outrageous red and black dress
I remember accessorizing,
All the girls trying on each other’s clothes
And styling each other’s hair
And Guiqi trying on more than 10 different pieces
And LayTing looking all ‘Su Nu’
Shirley the ‘Avril Lavigne punk’
Weite and hair gel
Mabel the ‘look-good-in-anything’
And Vivien providing all the accessories

I remember Fang Yi and Lam in Yukatas
Confessing to Zhang Quan and Herrick
And Herrick proposing to Esther

And most vividly of all, I remember Disneyland
When we forgot about tan sensei and Kansokus
And lost ourselves as kids again
(I remember Nigel’s disgusting pink shirt too)
And Ashley’s Bambi ears
And Jiajia and Deborah running off without us!
I remember spinning in a teacup
And walking about like drunkards
I remember screaming till my throat hurt
And Zhang Quan’s open mouth policy
And the dazzling lights of the parade

And I remember getting on the plane and returning
But I still live in the fantasy of Disney
With the 19 others who touched my life so
Still say ‘Itadakimasu’ before every meal
Still wear knee high, striped socks
And still smile when I see a traffic light (shingou)
And most dreams dissipate quickly
But this dream is real
And this dream lives on… Harajuku style
